TomTom and Microsoft Introducing Conversational AI for Automobiles

TomTom and Microsoft are teaming up to bring a smart assistant to your car. This assistant, powered by AI, promises better voice commands for navigation, finding places, and controlling car functions. It aims to make driving tasks easier and more natural for users.

TomTom, widely recognized for GPS, collaborated with Microsoft to create a smart AI assistant. This assistant uses advanced technology from OpenAI’s language models, along with Microsoft tools such as Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Cognitive Services. Cosmos DB is a versatile database, and Cognitive Services offers APIs for AI applications. Together, TomTom and Microsoft aim to deliver a capable assistant, that benefits from the latest advancements in technology.

TomTom assures that their voice assistant will blend with many car systems made by big car companies. They say these car brands can keep their logos and styles. This means we might see it in cars from lots of different brands. They haven’t said they’re working with specific car makers yet. Still, their tech will be part of TomTom’s Digital Cockpit, a system for car entertainment that’s open and easy to adjust. This assistant might also team up with Microsoft, adding more features and possibilities for car users.

Before, other companies attempted to put a smart AI, like ChatGPT, into cars. Last June, Mercedes tested ChatGPT in some cars for three months. They used Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI too. Now, TomTom will showcase this AI at CES in January. At that event, we’ll learn more about how it all functions. This isn’t new—others tried to do something similar. Mercedes had a trial, and now TomTom, partnering with Microsoft, is bringing this AI to a big tech event to show how it works in cars.

Drivers can easily talk to their car, asking a smart helper to guide them to places, spot stops on the way, and even adjust things inside, like temperature or music, by just speaking. This system connects with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, using big language models to make it work.

It’s all part of TomTom’s Digital Cockpit, an open platform in cars that’s like a control center. This platform has both TomTom and Microsoft teamed up to make driving easier and more connected, letting people use voice commands to manage their journey and car settings smoothly.
