To achieve this goal, AI Cyber Defense supports the Secure AI Framework, a collaborative platform for sharing best practices and standards for securing AI systems. The initiative also invests in a secure, AI-ready network of global data centers, which can provide access to a range of digital services, including generative AI capabilities, such as the Vertex AI platform.

Moreover, the initiative announces a new cohort of 17 startups from the UK, US, and EU, under the Google for Startups Growth Academy’s AI for Cybersecurity Program, which will help to strengthen the transatlantic cybersecurity ecosystem with AI tools and skills.

How AI Cyber Defense can empower cyber defenders and organizations

Another goal of AI Cyber Defense is to empower cyber defenders and organizations to maximize the value of AI while limiting its utility to adversaries. This means that AI governance choices, such as regulations, policies, and norms, are balanced and aligned with the interests and values of society. The initiative also supports targeted investments and partnerships between industry and government, which can facilitate the development and deployment of AI solutions for cybersecurity.

Furthermore, the initiative expands the Google.org Cybersecurity Seminars Program, which supports universities to train the next generation of cybersecurity experts from underserved communities, with AI-focused modules.

How AI Cyber Defense can advance research and innovation in AI-powered security

The third goal of AI Cyber Defense is to advance research and innovation in AI-powered security, which can help to generate breakthroughs and solutions for generational security challenges. This means that AI research initiatives, such as grants, partnerships, and collaborations, are focused on exploring and addressing the key questions and problems in AI security, such as code verification, cyber offense and defense, and large language models.

To achieve this goal, AI Cyber Defense announces $2 million in research grants and strategic partnerships, which will help to strengthen cybersecurity research initiatives using AI. The funding is supporting researchers at institutions including The University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford, who are working on various topics related to AI security. This builds on the ongoing efforts to stimulate the cybersecurity ecosystem, such as the $12 million commitment to the New York research system last year.
